Pitot Mast

Heads UP!

If you purchased a GOLD Anodized aluminum Pitot Mast from SafeAir1 or Avery Tools, we have had two Pitot Masts returned to us recently with cracks along the weld.  We suggest ALL customers inspect their Pitot Mast immediately.  In a typical RV installation, you'll need an inspection mirror and flashlight to see the weld through the inspection panel.  (Apply a slight "load" on the mast in various directions while inspecting the weld)

The image below shows a mast with a cracked weld.  Though it may not appear significant, aluminum can work harden (due to vibration), resulting in propagation of the crack.

We recommend the immediate inspection of your Pitot Mast for cracks.  This can be accomplished with simple hand tools, a flashlight, and inspection mirror.  Be sure to examine the weld area closely.  Apply a “side load” to the mast (in all directions) while visually inspecting the weld area.  The side load will help open up any hairline fractures that may be present.

Weld inspections (engine mount, torque tubes, pitot mast, etc.) should be part of your annual condition inspection, whenever components are accessible, or on a frequency basis as determined by the owner/operator.

We have had NO reports of cracked steel pitot masts.  A simple magnet will confirm whether your Pitot Mast is steel or aluminum.

If you have a SafeAir1 Pitot Mast that is cracked, please return it to SafeAir1 for a replacement.  Be sure to include your shipping address in the parcel.  (Replacements available November 01, 2011)

If your Pitot Mast is not cracked but you’d prefer the newest offering, just return the old one to SafeAir1 for a replacement.

DO NOT RETURN Pitot Masts to Avery Tools.  Send them to the address listed below.

Third Generation Pitot Mast

(Blue Anodized) – Our current offering.

As a result of the cracks in previous Pitot Masts, we’ve done a few things to reduce this potential in future products.

Here’s what’s new:

  • Slightly thicker base plate. (new base plate is .070”, previously .063”)
  • Welding is now done in a close tolerance jig with copper plates that absorb heat from the base plate during the weld.  This allows for more heat in the weld.
  • More heat allows the use of more filler rod and better penetration, resulting in a better bead and stronger weld.

  • Low Drag - Streamline Tubing
  • Light Weight - Aluminum
  • New - Single Piece Joggled Top Plate (Tig Welded)
  • Detailed Installation Instructions and Images
  • Simple installation, Takes About 90 Minutes
  • Satisfaction Guaranteed
  • Affordable

Provided with an installation template suitable for all the RV-series aircraft but can be used in other aircraft, too.  (Some modifications may be necessary - See NOTE below)

Pitot Masts are acid etched and finished with a high quality anodized coating.

Aluminum cannot be Chrome Plated.  As a result, the Pitot Mast must be either painted or polished by the builder.

NOTE:  If your aircraft is not an RV and you're curious if the SafeAir1 pitot mast will work for you, we'll be happy to ship you one with an invoice.  If you're able to handle it, make faces, funny noises, and do a little "cipherin", we think you'll figure out a way to make it work.  If that's the case, pay the invoice, if not, send it back within 30 days (in like new condition) and pay nothing.  Your only risk is shipping!  Offer valid for shipping within Contiguous U.S. ONLY - If you're interested in this offer, email SafeAir1 directly through the "Contact" button on the menu bar, or email us at CustomerCare@SafeAir1.com
